Alghero is the most characteristic tourist resort on the Coral Riviera,
a littoral made up of solitary creeks, and small bays with white sandy
beaches all crowned by thick pine forests and high cliffs towering over
an emerald-green sea. The mild climate, the crystal-clear water, the
delicate scents of the Mediterranean vegetation, all invite the tourist
to spend a pleasant and relaxing holiday here.
The historical centre of Alghero is one of the most interesting in Sardinia. Its
origins can be traced back to about 1300. The imposing
town walls, the decorative historical palaces, the old churches -
together with the dialect and the local traditions - are all reminders
of the Catalan civilization. A visit to the old town can start from the harbour,
dominated by the Maddalena Bastion and the tower by the same
name. Cross through the Porta a Mare to reach the heart of the town and Piazza Civica.

(Main Square).
The areas surrounding Alghero offer several interesting archaeological
destinations and excursions into nature. As you leave Alghero heading north, you
pass the Lido di San Giovanni sea front along the road
running parallel to Maria Pia Beach, and reach the unusual village of Fertilia. From there you can reach the Bombarde (Spiaggia delle Bombarde) and Lazzaretto (Cala del Lazzaretto)
beaches, the latter being characterised by an old tower.

Alghero and its surrounds represent an uncontaminated area for
photographers and underwater-archaeology lovers. Tours can be organised
all over the area, to see some of the many prehistoric remains and
villages (the 'Nuraghi') and the domus de janas or 'fairies' houses'.
The Grotte di Nettuno
(Neptune's Caves) and Nuraghe Palmavera (a typical Sardinian
prehistoric construction) are not to be missed - even if you are only
on a weekend visit. They can be reached by boat sailing past Capo Galera (Galera
Promontory) and Punta Giglio towards Capo Caccia, famous for its spectacular rocks and
cliffs. Here, in one of the most breathtaking panoramic sites in
Sardinia, is the Escala del Cabirol
(the Deer's Stairway). The alternative way to reach the Grotte di
Nettuno, is by descending its 656 steps down the cliff side, directly
from the promontory.
